Tamang Heritage

Tamang Heritage Trek is a popular trekking route in Nepal that takes you through the Tamang ethnic community, which is one of the largest ethnic groups in Nepal. Itinerary


Day 1 – Kathmandu: Arrival Day

Upon your arrival at the airport, please look for a representative from Nepal Challenge Trek The representative will help you carry your bags and transfer you to a hotel in Kathmandu. After you arrive at the hotel and get fresh, a small meeting will be conducted to brief you about the program. You will stay in the hotel overnight.

Day 2 – Drive to Syabrubesi

We head towards our destination after having breakfast. Driving towards the north of Kathmandu, we will reach Syabrubesi via Trishuli Bazaar. It will take about eight hours to reach Syabrubesi at 1460 meters altitude. The actual duration may vary depending on the condition of the road. It may take upto 9 hours in rainy season. On reaching there, a lodge will be arranged for your overnight stay.

Day 3 – Trek to Gatlang village

The trekking starts from Syabrubesi. We will ascend for a few hours and come across a viewpoint. From there, you can see Gosaikunda range, Langtang Lirung and Friendship World Treks in their magnificent glorious view. Today we will walk for six hours along several villages and come to Goljang valley. A short climb will take us to Gatlang village. It is a Tamang village at 2230 meters altitude. You will stay in one of the Tamang houses with a Tamang family.

Day 4 -Trek to Tatopani

We will say goodbye to the family and continue our journey from Gatlang village. First, we will get down to Bhotekoshi river and cross a suspension bridge. Chilime hydropower can be seen nearby. After crossing the bridge, we will climb until we reach Tatopani (2380m). Tatopani means ‘hot water’, and as the name suggests, there are hot water springs in this village. Today also, you will stay overnight in one of the village houses after walking for about six hours.

Day 5 – Trek to Nagthali

It is a tough day in our whole journey. We will climb steeply to reach Nagthali viewpoint which is at an altitude of 3165 meters. This is the highest point in our trekking. Beautiful views of Langtang Lirung, Friendship World Treks, Kerung and Sanjen are the rewards for your arduous efforts to reach this viewpoint. After spending sometime there, we will get down to Thuman village at 2240 meters altitude. On the way, we will see several ancient monasteries. Total walk on this day will be for seven hours. Today you will enjoy a homestay in Thuman village

Day 6 – Trek to Timure village

From Nagthali, we will continue our journey to another village. Today’s trekking will be relatively easier and you will get plenty of time to enjoy the landscapes and take photographs. We will get down to Timure river and from there we will reach near the Tibetan border in Rasuwa Gadi. A suspension bridge marks the border between Tibet and Nepal. We will get back to Timure village at 2050 meters. Overnight stay will be at a traditional Tamang house in this village.

Day 7 – Trek to Briddim village

There will be few ups and downs in the path to the last village of our journey. Passing through the forests of rhododendron, we reach Briddim village. The village is situated at the base of Langtang, at an elevation of 2235 meters. It will take us about four hours to reach the village consisting of less than 50 houses and a monastery called Dukchu Gompa. We will stay in one of those houses, your last homestay of this program.

Day 8 – Back to Syabrubesi

Bidding farewell to the host family and Briddim village, we will walk along the side of Bhote Kosi river. We will pass through more villages with traditional houses and fields. Finally after four hours of trekking, we will reach Syabrubesi. It was the starting point of our trekking and also is the end point. You will stay overnight in a lodge.

Day 9 – Return to Kathmandu

After a memorable trip and homestay in different villages of the Langtang region, we will now return to the capital city, Kathmandu. A bus will take about eight hours to drive you from Syabrubesi to Kathmandu. Again, the total time will also depend on the condition of the road. Once you enter Kathmandu valley, you will be taken to a hotel for rest and overnight stay.

Day 10 – Final day

Your 10-day trekking program comes to an end. If you wish to extend your stay and visit more places, involve in other events, we are ready to help. Otherwise, you will be transferred to the international airport for your flight to onward destination. We wish to see you again in the future. Thank you for letting us serve you.

Trip Information


The Tamang Heritage Trek typically starts from Syabrubesi, which is about a 7-8 hour drive from Kathmandu. From there, the trek leads through beautiful rhododendron forests, traditional Tamang villages, and high mountain passes, before reaching the beautiful Langtang valley.

The trek offers a unique cultural experience as you will get to interact with the friendly Tamang people, learn about their way of life, and taste their local cuisine. You will also get to visit ancient monasteries, chortens, and prayer flags along the way.

The Tamang Heritage Trek is a moderate trek that can be completed in about 10-12 days. The best time to undertake this trek is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons when the weather is clear, and the views are stunning.
